Australia yesterday doubled its counter-terrorism funding for Indonesia to $20 million over the next five years, but the country's police chief could not provide details of the program.

The extra $10 million will be spent on strengthening the Indonesian national police force, as well as on travel security and combating terrorist financing, according to an Australian government statement.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer made the announcement three months after terrorists attacked the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, killing 10 people.

"We appreciate the excellent work that the Indonesian police have been doing since the Jakarta embassy bombing, and of course they did excellent work after the Bali bombing, and we're happy to co-operate with them," he said in Jakarta.

Mr Downer said intelligence showed that further terrorist attacks were being planned in Indonesia. "We have no doubt that these people are out there trying to recruit, get more people, including people who might be prepared to resort to suicide bombing," he said.

Mr Downer said the funding increase was separate to Australia's support this year for the establishment of the $37 million Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Co-operation (JCLEC), which aims to boost anti-terrorism efforts across the region.

But Indonesian police chief Da'i Bachtiar said the money would, in fact, be spent on the JCLEC, and he seemed unaware of the size of the donation.

This came after he met Mr Downer to discuss joint co-operation on counter-terrorism.

According to a statement, Australia plans to help Indonesia strengthen its airports, immigration and Customs control capabilities.

It also aims to stop terrorist financing through developing international co-operation.
